River of Concrete
In April 2007, the artist Henk Hofstra created an
“urban river” in the Dutch town of Drachten. The
Blue Road installation—featuring over half a mile
of road painted blue and the phrase “WATER IS LIFE”
written in twenty-four-foot-high letters across
it—symbolizes the waterway that used to be
where the road is now. The project used over a
thousand gallons of paint.
