inhabited the aral sea. once the world’s fourth-largest
inland sea, since the 1960s the aral has shrunk in surface
area by more than three-fourths. Most of the shrinkage
has been caused by large-scale water diversions of tributary rivers; the water principally is used to grow cotton.
