ON A DARK AND MOONLESS night of storms, Hans Kruuk observed a pack of spotted hyenas engaging in a predatory orgy of killing. The Dutch biologist had spent
three and a half years living with Serengeti hyenas, documenting
their complex matriarchal clan structure and cooperative hunting
strategies, and keeping a full-grown hyena named Solomon as
a house pet. Hyenas make a living by scavenging and hunting.
